What does Cuba mean?

Cuba is a contraction of the word Cubanacan, which means a dwelling-place (lugar de vivienda o morada). Some of the names in Cuba are derived originally from the native Indian language. Almost nothing else remains of the original Indian traditions, except for tobacco, which was a ritual drug for the Taino, some of the first inhabitants of the island.

For more than 50 years, the musicians and dancers of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas have been recognized as some of the most vital and dynamic proponents of rumba and the African roots of Cuban culture. Over the years, the troupe has added ritual and religious music and stories to its repertoire—including some of the oldest African forms existing in Cuba today as well as the newest. It is said that “without rumba, there is no Cuba, and without Cuba, there is no rumba.” And without Los Muñequitos, the musical world would be missing a part of its soul.

Directed by ex-Sierra Maestra drummer Juan De Marcos Gonzalez, the Afro-Cuban All Stars have been essential to the growing worldwide popularity of Afro-Cuban music. Their 1997 album, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta, was the first to be recorded during the now-legendary Buena Vista Social Club sessions. A multi-generational big band, with members ranging in age from 13 to 81, the Afro-Cuban All Stars incorporate the full spectrum of Latin dance music, including mambo, cha cha, salsa, rumba, son montuno, timba, guajira, danz
ón, abakuá, and bolero.

Salsa Cubana

Salsa was the fourth innovation based on Cuban music to hit the USA (after Cubop, Mambo and Filin). Salsa was initially developed in the USA, not in Cuba. Because Cuba has so many indigenous types of music there has always been a problem in marketing the 'product' abroad to people who did not understand the differences between rhythms that, to a Cuban, are quite distinct.
